  • Learn key aspects of the newborn physical exam 

  • Focus on normal versus abnormal physical findings in a newborn 

  • Understand the differential diagnosis for newborn respiratory distress in a newborn 

  • Learn the epidemiology, pathophysiology, presentation, diagnosis and management for the most common etiologies of respiratory distress in a newborn 

  • Understand basic epidemiology of neonatal jaundice 

  • Explain basic bilirubin metabolism and be able to apply this understanding to the pathophysiology of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia 

  • Recognize the clinical presentation for a neonate with jaundice 

  • Conduct an appropriate diagnostic evaluation for a neonate presenting with jaundice 

  • Describe the management of neonatal jaundice 

  • Define Brief Resolved Unexplained Events, or BRUEs 

  • Recognize the clinical presentation of a BRUE Diagnose and risk stratify a patient with a BRUE 

  • Understand the principles of management of BRUEs 

  • Describe the pathophysiology of asthma

  • Discuss the common presentations of UTIs in children of different ages 

  • Diagnose a UTI based on clinical presentation and laboratory data 

  • Choose empiric therapy for an infant with a febrile UTI 

  • Describe the approach to imaging after a first febrile UTI in infants 

  • Explain the pathophysiology of Kawasaki Disease (KD) 

  • Recognize the clinical features and diagnostic criteria of KD 

  • Describe the potential complications of KD Discuss the important steps in managing a child with KD 

  • Understand the importance of monitoring child development 

  • Explain the difference between developmental surveillance and developmental screening 

  • Identify the major milestones from birth to five years of age

  • Recognize the common clinical presentation, describe the ear exam, understand diagnostic criteria, and create a differential for otitis media and otalgia 

  • Understand the basics of acute otitis media management 

  • Explain the basic pathophysiology of pediatric constipation 

  • Recognize its clinical presentation 

  • Discuss how to diagnose constipation 

  • Understand the management for constipation
