Demonstration of Extubation Procedure

Learn how to conduct an extubation readiness test and how to prepare for and perform an extubation.

Released:

June 23, 2015

Audience:

Respiratory Therapists

Learning Objectives
  • Identify the essential airway and intubation equipment required to safely perform extubation and to immediately re‑establish an advanced airway if extubation fails

  • Explain physiologic and clinical criteria used to determine patient readiness for extubation following mechanical ventilation

  • Apply appropriate preparation steps and equipment setup to ensure patient safety during planned extubation

  • Analyze patient respiratory effort, oxygenation, and secretion management during and immediately after extubation to detect early signs of airway compromise

  • Evaluate extubation outcomes to determine whether ongoing airway support, escalation of care, or re‑intubation readiness is required
