Learning Objectives
  • Identify newborns at high risk for complications based on prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal risk factors and determine the need for prompt stabilization and monitoring.

  • Perform a comprehensive initial assessment of high-risk newborns, including thermoregulation, respiratory, cardiovascular, nutritional, metabolic, infectious, and neurologic evaluation.

  • Apply evidence-based interventions to stabilize high-risk newborns, including management of hypothermia, respiratory distress, hypoglycemia, circulatory compromise, and feeding or fluid requirements.

  • Recognize risk factors, clinical signs, and diagnostic findings associated with neonatal infection, hyperbilirubinemia, hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), and neonatal seizures, and initiate appropriate treatment strategies.

  • Develop ongoing management and transfer plans for high-risk newborns based on clinical assessment findings, treatment priorities, and resource availability.
