Introduction and Routine Care
In this video, Dr. Diane Gashumba introduces the Rwandan National Neonatal Protocol online course, and Francois Biziyaremye presents the key aspects in routine care of the well newborn.

Learning Objectives
Recall the key immediate concerns in the assessment of a newborn during adaptation to extrauterine life, including risks related to hypothermia, infection, hypoglycemia, respiratory compromise, and neurologic status.
Explain the physiologic transition from fetal to extrauterine circulation and identify conditions that may interfere with successful newborn adaptation after birth.
Apply evidence-based measures to prevent neonatal hypothermia by implementing appropriate thermal protection strategies before and after delivery.
Perform routine newborn care by assessing Apgar scores, evaluating maternal and birth history, conducting a focused physical examination, and supporting early breastfeeding initiation.
Evaluate newborn care practices and determine appropriate interventions for umbilical cord care, prevention of eye infections, prevention of hemorrhagic disease of the newborn, and infection prevention in the neonatal care environment.
