Learning Objectives
  • Explain the etiology, pathophysiology, investigation, and management of common neonatal hematologic disorders, including anemia, bleeding disorders, and polycythemia.

  • Describe the development of physiologic anemia in newborns and identify factors that can exacerbate anemia through blood loss, hemolysis, decreased red blood cell production, or excessive phlebotomy.

  • Apply clinical and laboratory findings to evaluate neonatal anemia and determine appropriate diagnostic testing, treatment strategies, and indications for red blood cell transfusion.

  • Analyze causes of neonatal bleeding by differentiating disorders related to clotting factor deficiencies, platelet abnormalities, consumptive coagulopathy, and inherited hematologic conditions.

  • Evaluate the risks, clinical manifestations, and treatment indications for neonatal polycythemia, including the appropriate use of partial exchange transfusion based on patient symptoms and hematocrit values.
