Master Teacher Series: Case Study on ECPR

Learning Objectives
Recall clinical scenarios in which extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is considered during cardiopulmonary resuscitation when conventional airway and circulatory support fails
Explain the relationship between advanced airway management, effective ventilation, and the successful implementation of ECPR in pediatric cardiac intensive care settings
Apply anticipatory airway and resuscitation planning for patients identified as high risk for cardiac arrest where ECMO may be required
Analyze patient deterioration patterns to determine when early escalation—including airway optimization and pre‑arrest ECMO cannulation—may improve outcomes
Evaluate airway and ventilation preparedness as integral components of ECPR strategy in critically ill pediatric patients
