Introduction to Arrhythmias

This video introduces concepts required to identify and evaluate arrhythmias in the pediatric cardiac patient.

Released:

March 23, 2015

Audience:

Physicians, Nurses, Emergency Medical Technicians

Learning Objectives
  • Recall the components of the cardiac conduction system and describe the normal pathway of electrical impulse transmission from the sinoatrial node through the ventricles.

  • Explain the relationship between cardiac conduction and ECG waveforms by identifying the physiologic significance of the P wave, PR interval, QRS complex, ST segment, QT interval, and T wave.

  • Apply a systematic approach to ECG rhythm analysis by evaluating P waves, atrial rhythm, heart rate, PR intervals, ventricular rhythm, QRS complexes, and ST segments.

  • Calculate heart rate and interval durations using ECG measurements and determine whether findings fall within normal limits.

  • Evaluate clinical history, physical examination findings, and ECG characteristics to assess the likelihood and significance of pediatric arrhythmias.
