Hands-on Mechanical Ventilation

Learning Objectives
Identify appropriate initial ventilator modes, settings, and parameters following endotracheal intubation in a pediatric patient with respiratory failure
Explain the physiologic rationale for lung‑protective ventilation strategies, including reduced tidal volumes, permissive hypercapnia, and oxygen saturation targeting
Apply ventilator adjustments to manage worsening lung compliance, hypoxemia, and evolving respiratory distress in mechanically ventilated children
Analyze ventilator waveforms, blood gas data, and clinical findings to guide escalation, recruitment, and subsequent weaning of ventilatory support
Evaluate readiness for extubation using clinical stability, ventilator parameters, airway leak testing, and patient neurologic status to ensure safe removal of the endotracheal tube
