Learning Objectives
  • Identify appropriate initial ventilator modes, settings, and parameters following endotracheal intubation in a pediatric patient with respiratory failure

  • Explain the physiologic rationale for lung‑protective ventilation strategies, including reduced tidal volumes, permissive hypercapnia, and oxygen saturation targeting

  • Apply ventilator adjustments to manage worsening lung compliance, hypoxemia, and evolving respiratory distress in mechanically ventilated children

  • Analyze ventilator waveforms, blood gas data, and clinical findings to guide escalation, recruitment, and subsequent weaning of ventilatory support

  • Evaluate readiness for extubation using clinical stability, ventilator parameters, airway leak testing, and patient neurologic status to ensure safe removal of the endotracheal tube
