Children's Hospital Early Warning Scoring (CHEWS) System

This video will discuss risk factors for pediatric cardiopulmonary arrest and an early warning-scoring tool and algorithm for arrest prevention.

Released:

May 13, 2015

Audience:

Physicians, Nurses

Learning Objectives
  • Describe the purpose of pediatric early warning scoring systems and explain their role in the early recognition of clinical deterioration and prevention of cardiopulmonary arrest.

  • Identify risk factors, warning signs, and physiologic indicators associated with impending pediatric cardiovascular or respiratory compromise, including abnormalities in behavioral, cardiovascular, respiratory, and oxygenation status.

  • Apply a pediatric early warning scoring tool to assess patient condition by assigning appropriate scores across clinical domains and calculating an overall risk score.

  • Analyze pediatric patient scenarios using early warning score findings and clinical assessment data to determine the level of deterioration and the need for escalation of care.

  • Evaluate appropriate interventions and escalation pathways based on early warning scores and changing patient status to support timely treatment and prevent progression to critical events.
