Arrhythmias: Disturbances of AV Conduction

In this video, Christine LaGrasta discusses the clinical pearls, causes and treatment of infants and children with arrhythmias in which there is a disturbance of AV conduction.

Released:

January 26, 2015

Audience:

Physicians, Nurses, Emergency Medical Technicians, Paramedics

Learning Objectives
  • Identify the major types of atrioventricular (AV) block, including first-degree AV block, second-degree AV block (Mobitz Type I and Mobitz Type II), and third-degree AV block, and recall their defining electrocardiographic characteristics.

  • Explain the underlying conduction disturbances associated with each type of AV block and distinguish how atrial and ventricular activity is affected in each condition.

  • Interpret electrocardiographic findings to differentiate first-degree AV block, Mobitz Type I AV block, Mobitz Type II AV block, and third-degree AV block based on PR interval behavior, QRS relationships, and AV synchrony.

  • Analyze clinical scenarios involving AV block to determine potential etiologies, including congenital heart disease, cardiomyopathy, myocarditis, rheumatic heart disease, surgical interventions, and medication-related causes.

  • Evaluate appropriate management strategies for patients with AV block by determining when treatment of the underlying cause is sufficient and when AV pacing may be indicated to restore atrioventricular synchrony.
