OPENPediatrics Named WebAward 2016 Outstanding Website

OPENPediatrics, a free and open social learning platform for pediatric clinicians worldwide, has been named as a WebAward 2016 Outstanding Website by the Web Marking Association. Launched at Boston Children's Hospital in 2012, the OPENPediatrics site is currently used in 139 countries and more than 2,200 hospitals worldwide.

The WebAward is the longest running annual award competition for web design, and a recognized standard of excellence for website development. Entries in 96 industry categories are judged by volunteer web marketing professionals on seven criteria: design, innovation, content, technology, interactivity, copywriting and ease of use.

The OPENPediatrics site received full marks for content, a recognition of the many contributions from pediatric clinicians at Boston Children's Hospital and around the world to the videos, interactive simulators and other content available in the OPENPediatrics library. This content shares leading knowledge in the diagnosis and treatment of sick children, addressing care in all resource settings.  Our library also contains more than 120 animations and illustrations of key concepts in pediatric care, created by our staff and available for non-commercial download and use by clinical educators worldwide.

OPENPediatrics also received a top score for technology, a recognition of the effort that has gone into the development of our new website, launched in June 2016. The site is hosted on a social learning platform co-developed by Boston Children's Hospital and the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center's Division of Clinical Informatics. In addition to presenting the library content in an engaging and easy to use format, the platform fosters social connections between clinicians worldwide. Any registered user on the site can create a public or private group to connect colleagues worldwide around a shared project or topic of interest. The groups include document sharing, threaded discussions and even video chat. The OPENPediatrics site also supports free, self-paced courses on a range of topics including cardiac critical care, non-accidental trauma, and pediatric pain and opioid prescribing.

In addition to the WebAward 2016 Outstanding Site recognition, OPENPediatrics was named a 2015 Tech Awards - Microsoft Education Award Laureate by the Tech Museum of Innovation for use of technology in addressing a global challenge; a 2014 KMWorld KM Reality Award winner by KM World Magazine, which recognizes an organization in which knowledge management is a positive reality; and has received two MITX awards. OPENPediatrics has also received the Health On the Net Foundation (HON) certification for reliable online health information.
