National Nurse Practitioner Week!

November 12th-18th is National Nurse Practitioner Week! National Nurse Practitioner Week is held annually to celebrate and recognize all of the hardworking nurse practitioners worldwide. Nurse Practitioner's (NPs) play a huge role in the healthcare industry offering high-quality, cost-effective, patient-centered health care. NPs diagnose and treat acute and chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, infections and injuries; they order, perform, interpret and supervise diagnostic tests such as lab work and x-rays; and they prescribe medications and other treatments. In addition, NPs partner with their patients, providing health education and counseling, thus guiding patients to make smarter health and lifestyle choices, which ultimately may lead to reduced health care costs.

This week, take the time to thank a nurse practitioner in your institution! The American Association of Nurse Practitioners offers a free resource guide for download that can help you plan activities to build awareness about the difference that Nurse Practitioner make in your institution and worldwide. Also, be sure to participate in the global conversation on social media using the hashtags #NPWeek and #NPsLead.

In support of National Nurse Practitioner Week, OPENPediatrics is pleased to feature some of our content presented by these hard-working and dedicated Nurse Practitioners. In our video, Management of Deformational Plagiocephaly in Hospitalized Infants Using a Novel Device, Nurse Practitioner and Director of Research in the NICU at Boston Children's Hospital Michele DeGrazia discusses her research in developing a novel device called the PlagioCradle and its use in treating Deformational Plagiocephaly.
