Welcome

It is an honor to welcome you to the 9th Annual Anesthesia for Global Outreach Course. In 2008, the Dalhousie Department of Anesthesia, Pain Management, and Perioperative Medicine launched Global Outreach: Anesthesia in Challenging Environments, a training program to prepare anesthesiologists to work in developing countries or austere environments. It was the first of its kind in North America and at that time, one of only three courses offered worldwide. The course in Halifax was the brain-child of Dr. Thomas Coonan. Recognizing that the delivery of safe/quality anesthesia was not always intuitive for anesthesia providers from a resource-rich environment wanting to work in the low resource setting, he sought to develop a course in North America similar to those offered in other parts of the world.
