MSF Paediatric Days 2017

The second MSF Paediatric Days will take place in Dakar, Senegal on the 15 and 16 of December 2017. The focus will be on neuro-critical conditions in children and paediatric pain management and supportive care. MSF Paediatric Days is an annual event for paediatric field staff, policy makers and academia to exchange ideas, align efforts, inspire and share frontline research to advance urgent paediatric issues of direct concern for the humanitarian field.

Children are the most vulnerable, and make up the largest proportion of MSF beneficiaries in the humanitarian emergency context. The paediatric needs far overweigh available resources such as access to essential drugs, diagnostic and medical equipment. There is also a shortage of adequately trained paediatric staff in humanitarian settings. Better paediatric awareness would not only improve the quality of paediatric health care but also allow for the identification of major gaps. Moreover there are important research gaps in paediatric topics from a low resource humanitarian perspective. Topics such as neonatology, paediatric neurology, shock fluid therapy and palliative care are just a few examples of the large array of conditions where humanitarian paediatrics is lagging behind.
