Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Egleston PICU Orientation

This course is geared toward new employees at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston as they complete their orientation in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. This course is required to be completed prior to coming off orientation.


Learning Objectives

  • Describe the importance of hand hygiene in preventing healthcare-associated infections
  • Describe basic principles, including indications and contraindications, of non-invasive ventilation strategies
  • Describe the basic principles of invasive mechanical ventilation
  • Demonstrate how to effectively suction endotracheal tubes
  • Identify strategies for effective sedation for intubated patients, and how to assess patients' level of sedation or withdrawal
  • Describe basic considerations, benefits, and challenges in providing nutrition to critically ill children
  • Describe the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and basic management of diabetic ketoacidosis
  • Define status epilepticus, seizure pathophysiology, and mechanisms of action for medications used in status epilepticus
  • Review an algorithm for the acute management of status epilepticus, including medications and potential complications
  • Describe the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and basic management of different etiologies of shock
  • Develop a systematic approach to evaluating a patient with a traumatic injury
  • Describe pathophysiology, assessment, and management of pain
  • Identify how to assess a patient's level of pain
  • Develop a framework for teamwork and event management in the pediatric cardiac intensive care unit
