The Essentials of Critical Care Advanced Practice in Pediatrics (ESCCAPPE) Workshop combines an online course of videos and other educational materials with a two-day, in-person course that will use large and small-group discussion, simulator-based skill sessions, case simulation and didactic lessons to teach and exercise diagnostic and therapeutic decision-making and skills essential to advanced practitioners in the pediatric ICU setting.
Learning Objectives
- Differentiate between respiratory distress and respiratory failure
- Discuss features and proper usage of non-rebreather masks and manual ventilator bags to provide oxygen to patients
- Describe techniques for proper airway positioning, obtaining a tight seal, and usage of basic airway adjuncts in bag-mask ventilation
- Determine how to assess the pediatric airway prior to intubation
- Discuss the indications, contraindications, and specific steps in performing rapid sequence induction for emergent intubation
- Discuss the indications and contraindications for tracheal intubation, pertinent airway anatomy and equipment used
- Demonstrate the steps required to successfully perform tracheal intubation, potential complications, appropriate aftercare, and common pitfalls
- Discuss the concepts required to identify and evaluate arrhythmias in the pediatric cardiac patient
- Discuss the diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of various arrhythmias originating in the atrium in the pediatric patient
- Discuss the diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of various arrhythmias originating from the AV node in the pediatric patient
- Discuss the clinical pearls, causes, and treatment of infants and children with arrhythmias in which there is a disturbance of AV conduction
- Discuss the diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of various arrhythmias originating in the ventricle in the pediatric patient
- Discuss the physiology, indications, equipment, voltage selection, and clinical considerations when performing cardiac defibrillation
- Discuss the physiology, indications, equipment, and voltage selection, and clinical considerations when performing cardioversion
