The Essentials of Critical Care Advanced Practice in Pediatrics (ESCCAPPE) Workshop combines an online course of videos and other educational materials with a two-day, in-person course that will use large and small-group discussion, simulator-based skill sessions, case simulation and didactic lessons to teach and exercise diagnostic and therapeutic decision-making and skills essential to advanced practitioners in the pediatric ICU setting.

Learning Objectives

  • Interpret pediatric chest x-rays in lung parenchyma and vasculature, airway and mediastinum, heart, and bony abnormalities
  • Review bronchiolitis, how to perform an intubation, and highlight important factors to consider before, during, and after the procedure
  • Review status asthmaticus, how to perform an intubation, and highlight important factors to consider before, during, and after the procedure
  • Review elevated intracranial pressure, how to perform an intubation, and highlight important factors to consider before, during, and after the procedure
  • Discuss the modes of ventilation, including volume controlled pressure, assist control, SIMV, and pressure support ventilation
  • Describe how to choose the appropriate mode of ventilation and ventilator settings
  • Discuss the pressure, volume and flow of waveforms and how to use these waveforms in troubleshooting mechanical ventilation issues
  • Describe the uses of capnography, phases of carbon dioxide waveforms, and interpreting capnograms
  • Utilize effective interdisciplinary teamwork between doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers during emergency events
  • Describe the Monro-Kellie Doctrine and how it relates to Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Discuss placing arterial pressure monitoring catheters, including indications, contraindications, equipment, and procedural techniques
  • Demonstrate the technique for placing an intraosseous (IO) line, including site selection, strategies for use, and monitoring for complications
